Food Poisoning & Foodborne Illnesses In San Diego

Food poisoning and E. coli infections can turn a normal meal into a medical emergency within hours. Severe dehydration, hospitalization, kidney complications, lost income, and long-term digestive issues are far more common than most people realize, especially when contaminated food comes from restaurants, grocery products, catered events, or improperly handled meals. At Mova Law Group, we help people in San Diego pursue compensation after serious foodborne illness caused by negligent food preparation, contamination, or unsafe food handling practices.

Many victims initially assume they have a “stomach bug” before symptoms rapidly escalate into severe cramping, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, or dangerous complications associated with E. coli and other bacterial infections. When multiple people become sick from the same source, restaurants, suppliers, distributors, and other businesses may be held legally responsible for the harm caused. Mova Law Group investigates the source of contamination, gathers medical and health department evidence, and fights to hold negligent parties accountable so clients can focus on recovery instead of battling insurance companies and corporate defense teams.

If You Got Sick After Eating at The Kebab Shop, You May Have a Legal Claim

In May 2026, the California Department of Public Health confirmed an active outbreak of Shiga toxin-producing E. coli O157:H7 linked to beef kofta – seasoned ground beef kebabs – served at multiple locations of The Kebab Shop restaurant chain across Northern and Southern California. As of May 19, 2026, nine California residents had been infected with the outbreak strain of E. coli O157:H7, with illness onset dates ranging from March 27 through April 30, 2026. Six of the victims were children. Five people were hospitalized, and two developed hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a severe complication that can cause acute kidney failure. No deaths have been reported.
In San Diego County specifically, two people were infected with E. coli after eating at local Kebab Shop locations. One was hospitalized but has since been released. The chain has multiple locations throughout San Diego County, from East Village to San Marcos.
The Kebab Shop stopped all sales of ground beef and beef kofta nationwide on May 18, 2026, after the California Department of Public Health linked the product as a potential source of the outbreak.

What Is E. Coli O157:H7 and Why Is It Dangerous?

    E. coli O157:H7 is not the same as the harmless bacteria that normally lives in the human gut. This strain produces Shiga toxins – biological compounds that damage the lining of the intestines and, in serious cases, attack the kidneys. Symptoms of infection typically begin three to four days after exposure and include bloody diarrhea, vomiting, and severe abdominal cramps. Most people recover within a week without medical intervention, but some develop serious disease requiring hospital care.

The most severe outcome is hemolytic uremic syndrome. HUS is a severe complication that can lead to acute kidney failure and is most common in young children. Two victims in this outbreak reached that threshold. HUS can require dialysis, cause permanent kidney damage, and in some cases lead to long-term neurological complications. A child who develops HUS from contaminated restaurant food may face years of medical treatment, follow-up care, and reduced kidney function for the rest of their life. That is not a short-term illness. It is a life-altering injury.

Who Is Responsible When a Restaurant Makes You Sick?

When a restaurant serves contaminated food and customers become ill, California law gives those victims the right to pursue compensation. Restaurants have a legal duty to handle, prepare, and serve food safely. That duty extends to the full supply chain – if the beef kofta was contaminated at the supplier level, both the supplier and the restaurant chain may share liability depending on the facts of the case.

The fact that The Kebab Shop voluntarily halted beef kofta sales nationwide after health authorities identified the product does not resolve the legal exposure from the weeks of sales that preceded that decision. Illness onset dates run from March 27 through April 30, 2026 – a five-week window during which the contaminated product was being served to customers, including children, across five California counties.

A personal injury attorney handling foodborne illness claims will look at several things: your medical records documenting the E. coli diagnosis, lab results confirming the outbreak strain, evidence placing you at a Kebab Shop location during the exposure window, and the full scope of your damages – medical bills, lost wages, pain and suffering, and in cases involving HUS or permanent injury, long-term projected costs of care.

What Victims Should Do Right Now

If you or your child ate at any Kebab Shop location between March 27 and April 30, 2026, and experienced severe stomach cramps, bloody diarrhea, or vomiting in the days that followed, three things matter immediately.

    • First, get medical care. San Diego County Public Health Officer Dr. Sayone Thihalolipavan urged anyone with symptoms to seek medical help right away, noting that children, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems face the highest risk. A confirmed diagnosis is the foundation of any legal claim.
    • Second, preserve everything. Keep receipts, credit card records, or any documentation showing you visited a Kebab Shop location during the exposure window. Save your medical records, lab results, and any communications with the restaurant chain.
    • Third, speak with an attorney before contacting the restaurant or its insurance carrier. The Kebab Shop has established a customer hotline and email for affected guests. That channel is managed by the company. Anything you say through it can be used to limit your claim. An attorney will ensure your legal rights are protected before you engage with the chain directly.
